List of invasive alien invertebrates relevant to Luxembourg

Originally compiled for assessments after the ISEIA protocol, this list mentions the invasive alien invertebrates present in Luxembourg and/or occurring and creating problems in at least one of the three adjacent EU member states. It is updated when new species appear. This list will provide a basis for the establishment of a national list of invasive alien species of Luxembourg concern pursuant to Article 12(1) of the EU Regulation 1143/2014 on Invasive Alien Species.

Concerning the mollusc Arion vulgaris, which was included in the original list of invasive alien invertebrates, the species was removed from the assessment as its status is currently controversial. Although this species has often been discussed in the past as an invasive species with a negative environmental impact in Central Europe, recent studies suggest that this species is not alien, but represents a native Central European species that became much more abundant through major changes in agriculture. See: Pfenninger et al. (2014) Misperceived invasion: the Lusitanian slug (Arion lusitanicus auct. non-Mabille or Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon 1855) is native to Central Europe. Evol. Appl. 7(6): 702-713.
