Importance and distribution in Luxembourg

The topmouth gudgeon was first detected in Luxembourg during the systematic river inventory of 2005, when it was found in the upstream dam of the Upper Sauer Lake in Bavigne.

Pseudorasbora parva is a fish species that typically inhabits eutrophic ponds, ditches and muddy brooks rich in aquatic vegetation but can sometimes also be found in larger streams and lakes. It is very tolerant to a wide range of environmental conditions. The species is highly invasive in Europe and is a healthy host for a deadly, non-specific pathogen (Sphaerothecum destruens) that poses a threat to the conservation of European fish diversity. Moreover, the topmouth gudgeon consumes large quantities of planktonic crustaceans which results in a high exploitative competition with native fish species.
